The church St. Panteleimon is located аbove the village Gorno Nerezi, 3 km. south of Skopje on the slopes of the mountain Vodno. Built by Alekseij Komnen of the Komnen family,in the year 1164. Until present time, the inscription of the marble upper-door construction was saved, on the entrance from the narthexin to the naos of the church. The architecture of the church is unique with eight-sided central dome, from brick and stone, and four small four-sided domes, placed on the angles of the church. This church is representing the oldest Byzantine monument, not only in Skopje, but also for entire Macedonia. The church was fresco-painted immediately after it was built up. Later in 15th, 16th and 19th century, the church was fresco-painted again. But the first process of fresco painting distinguishes the church as a most significant monument.
Through the years of existence this church like the most other monuments from this area experienced many accidents like fires, earthquakes, different destructions and looting. But today it is the only preserved monument of XII century, the time when Skopje was the cultural center of Skopje diocese. St. Panteleimon Monastery is considered as some of the best works of Byzantine art. The wall paintings inside the church, is a real challenge and a delight for all lovers of beauty and art.
In the modern buildings of the St. Panteleimon Monastery complex there is a national restaurant offering the best Macedonian dishes with the best panorama view of Skopje and the Vardar valley. The visit of this place is included in most of our tours.
