National Park “Mavrovo” is located in the southwestern part of the Republic. Macedonia and it is the largest of the three National parks. It covers an area of 73,088 hectares. Northern boundary of the national park begins at the border with Albania on a mountain peak with altitude of 2092 meters, then continues eastward to the top Fudam on Nichpurska Mountain (2221 meters) , then down to the south to Bistra peak (l728 m.). The boundary continues westward towards Golem Krcin (2341 m.) then up north again to the first mentioned mountain peak. The National Park “Mavrovo” includes parts of the mountains Shar Planina, Korab and Bistra and 52 peaks higher than 2000 meters The highest peak, as well as the highest point within the national park and Republic of Macedonia is Golem Korab with a height of 2764 meters. Lowest point is at called Boskov Bridge, which is located at the confluence of the small river Radika with Debar lake with only 600 meters above the sea level.Some major peaks found in the national park Large and Small Korab, Greater and Lesser Krcin, Fudam, Jastrebec, Small Shar and others. Despite the high peaks in the national park has a number of geomorphological relief forms: river valleys, gorges, waterfalls, fields, hollows, depressions and caves.
The climate in the national park is modified by the high mountain peaks and influenced by the Adriatic Sea, which is 95 km away and through the valley of the river Radika allows the warmer air to reach the colder regions. Normally in the higher parts of Mavrovo National Park the climate is more brutal and in the lower parts milder. At least rainy days are recorded in the period during the month of August and most common during the fall and spring in November, April and May. In the winters a significantly large amount of snow is falling in the region. The average annual cloudiness is 5.3 tenths- the maximum is in February and is 7.1 tenths, and the minimum in July and is 2.5 tenths. The average monthly temperature in Mavrovo National Park and municipal generally is 4.5°C in January and the highest monthly recorded temperatures in July average of 17.4°C.
As a result of the great differentiation of relief, Mavrovo National Park is characterized by a remarkable floristic wealth, which consists of over 1000 species of higher plants, of which 38 tree species, 35 shrubs and about sixty endemic, relict and rare species. National Park “Mavrovo” is a the only place in the Republic of Macedonia for seven plant species, 12 rare plant species, and within its borders we can find 33 other plant species that are rare in other parts of the country. The fauna of the National Park “Mavrovo” is also diverse consisting 140 species of birds, of which the most significant are the gray hawk, imperial eagle, Surrey (golden) eagle, forest owl, the great owl, pallid harrier, steppe harrier; 11 species of amphibians, 12 species of reptiles and 38 species of mammals. Among the mammals, the most important are: bear, lynx, chamois, wild cat etc..
Within the territory of the National Park “Mavrovo” there 42 settlements. It is worth to mention that every year on July 12, here is held the famous cultural event Galicknik Wedding. Of the cultural and historical monuments must be mentioned the monastery St. John the Baptist, Deer Leap Bridge, Old mosque in the village. Rostuse and the archaeological site St. Nicholas.
