Skopje Old Bazaar – a crossroad of many cultures and religions
Under the Kale Fortress lies Skopje Old Bazaar one of the oldest and biggest bazaars on the Balkans dating from the beginning of 12 century. The real trade and commerce center which reached its peak during the Otoman empire.
The word bazaar originates from the Turkish expression “Charshi” (comes from oldPersian), which marks a crossroads or a square which can be approached from all four sides.
Skopje Old Town is a special, very important and interesting complex of Turkish-city architecture. Despite the fact that it has greatly changed its appearance, it is well preserved today. The Old Bazar is the type of Oriental-Balkan bazaars and falls into one of the largest in Macedonia.
The city of Skopje was developed according to the oriental urban principles with two characteristic separate zones: the first zone comprises the bazaar as a center of crafts, trade and traffic, and the second zone which included neighborhoods as residential area. The merchants stores were developed in the city center and could be approached from all sides, while living neighborhoods were developed in a separate area, away from the business noise protected from the street with spacious gardens and rich interior setting.
Bazaar were important and facilities as were undercover, mosques, inns, caravan-sarai baths, and other objects that had general or religious character.
Skopje Bazaar itself was formed from stores with lightweight construction and has been built around tightly constructed bezisten. The oldest core of the bazaar was here. In the period between the two world wars, as before, the Bazaar was a trade-center of the city. It encompassed only the economic part stores and other public facilities, primarily inns and caravan palaces as a travel destination.
The main buildings in the bazaar- the shops were set on both sides of the streets. They were a small size, built of provisional material with simple constructions. The Old Town streets had a distinctive look because the shops were built next to each other on an equal height as to be under one roof.
Skopje Old Bazaar is a place of many tourist attractions worth to see while visiting Skopje, from old handcraft- shops and original music to cultural and historic monuments and buildings. It is a place where you can spend a couple of days exploring a world full of different sights, sounds smells and aromas.
